Medical Description

Antibiotic belongs to first generation cephalosporins used in the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis, skin and soft tissue infection, prosthetic joint infection and urinary tract infection.

Dosage & Administration

-Administer without regards to meals. -Administer with food to diminish gastrointestinal complaints. -Suspension: Shake suspension well before use. -In case of dispersible tablet: drop the tablet into 120 ml of water. Allow 30 to 60 seconds for the tablet to disperse. Stir contents thoroughly and swallow entirety. Dispersible tablets should be prepared immediately prior to ingestion.

Side Effects

Diarrhea, abdominal pain, agranulocytosis, anaphylaxis, angioedema, arthralgia, cholestasis, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, dyspepsia, erythema multiforme, erythematous rash, fever, genital candidiasis, hepatic failure, increased serum transaminases, maculopapular rash, nausea, neutropenia, pruritus, pseudomembranous colitis, serum sickness, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia, urticaria, vaginitis and vomiting.

Safety Advice

-Should not be given to patients suffering from hypersensitivity to cefadroxil. -Anaphylaxis may occur. -Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy. -Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection. -Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. -Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. -In case of over dose be ready to tell or show what was taken, how much and when it happened, and seek immediate medical attention. Drug Interactions
-Aminoglycosides: Cephalosporins may enhance the nephrotoxic effect of Aminoglycosides. -BCG Vaccine: Antibiotics may diminish the therapeutic effect of BCG Vaccine. -Sodium Picosulfate: Antibiotics may diminish the therapeutic effect of Sodium Picosulfate. -Vitamin K Antagonists (eg, warfarin): Cephalosporins may enhance the anticoagulant effect of Vitamin K Antagonists.
Pregnancy & Lactation
-Cefadroxil crosses the placenta, based on the available data, cephalosporin antibiotics are generally considered compatible for use during pregnancy. -Cefadroxil is present in breast milk. The relative infant dose (RID) of cefadroxil is 2.6%, in general, breastfeeding is considered acceptable when the RID of a medication is <10%. In general, antibiotics that are present in breast milk may cause non-dose-related modification of bowel flora. Monitor infants for GI disturbances. -Ask your physician before taking any medication during pregnancy or lactation.
