Zoladex injections are a synthetic hormone therapy that contains the active ingredient goserelin, which is part of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) group of agonists. This medication is used to treat certain types of hormone-responsive cancers.
Zoladex is available as an implant under the skin that is usually given in the abdominal area, specifically two inches away from the navel.
How to give Zoladex injection
Zoladex injections are given by a doctor or healthcare provider, following these steps:
Prepare the patient by placing the patient in a comfortable position with the upper body slightly elevated, and sterilize the abdominal area and two inches from the navel line with an alcohol swab.
Prepare the injection , by:
Make sure there are no tears in the bag, then open it.
Empty the bag onto the table or into your hand rather than pulling the syringe out of the bag, as it is possible to accidentally pull the plunger out of the syringe.
Hold the syringe up to the light and make sure that at least part of the Zoladex implant is visible. There is no need to remove air bubbles, as with liquid injections, and pressing the plunger partly may cause the implant to fall out of the syringe.
Gently pull the plastic cap up and away from the plunger and discard it, then remove the needle cap.
To give the injection , insert the needle under the skin at a 30 to 45 degree angle to the skin so that the protective sheath touches the skin, then gently press the plunger without pressing it hard. Then withdraw the syringe and dispose of it.
When does the effect of Zoladex injection end?
The effect of Zoladex injection ends within one month, after which another injection must be obtained if the treatment period continues.
